Background
Halogen-based flame-retardant materials will produce a large amount of smoke and toxic corrosive hydrogen halide gas during the flame-retardant process, causing secondary hazards to personnel. It may get in the way of fire rescue. In February 2003, European Union promulgated RoHs (The Restriction of Hazardous Substances in Electrical and Electronic Equipment, Directive 2002/95/EC) and WEEE (Waste Electric and Electronic Equipment, Directive 2002/96/EC). The former is an instruction on the restriction and prohibition of the use of certain toxic and hazardous substances and elements in electrical and electronic equipment. The latter is an instruction on the recycling of waste electrical and electronic equipment. These two directives became the laws (regulations) of 15 EU member states in August 2004. WEEE came into effect in August 2005, and RoHs came into effect in July 2006.
Western Europe is about to implement new flame retardant classification methods and testing standards in building materials and other industries. China has also submitted for approval the national standards for the combustion performance of building materials and products, which have the same characteristics as the above-mentioned new Western European standards, that is, when evaluating the flame retardant properties of materials in terms of heat release rate, fire development rate, smoke generation and corrosiveness and toxicity of combustion products. In order to pass the new standard, traditional halogen-based flame-retardant materials will be terminated, and people will turn to carbon-based flame-retardant materials. Flame-retardant plastics (especially intumescent flame-retardant plastics) and thermosetting flame-retardant plastics are also in line with the RoHS directive on the restriction and prohibition of hazardous substances.
Advantage
Halogen-free flame retardant produces less smoke when burning, and does not produce toxic and corrosive gases. Halogen-free flame retardant additives are mainly phosphorus compounds and metal hydroxides. These two types of compounds are non-volatile and do not produce corrosive gases when burned, and are called pollution-free flame retardants.
